Security Information

Considering the seriousness of the security situation and the high risk of kidnappings and attacks against foreigners in all parts of the national territory, traveling to Afghanistan is not advised for any reason.

In recent months, the security situation has deteriorated significantly in all parts of the country, including major cities (Kabul, Herat, Mazar-e-Sharif, Jalalabad, Kandahar, Kunduz). The Southern and Southeastern areas remain critical and the situation has worsened also in the North and West of the country.

The risk of terrorist attacks has risen in major cities, including the capital, Herat, and other parts of the country, against institutional objectives or establishments frequented by foreigners (guest houses, hotels, restaurants, offices, houses, vehicles, markets, etc..).

There is a high risk of attacks by IED (Improvised Explosive Device) planted on roadsides, worn by suicide bombers or loaded in cars and other motorized vehicles. Places frequented by international personnel in Kabul and the main government buildings represent privileged targets for so-called “Complex Attacks” involving the explosion of a car bomb or a suicide bomber followed by the irruption of an armed commando. The high number of mines in the country makes it extremely dangerous to move beyond the main roads inside urban areas.

Clashes with the Taliban insurgency have increased in numbers, intensity and geographical distribution. Attacks on convoys, military structures of NATO and ANSF (Afghan National Security Forces) and airports are more frequent. Rocket attacks on the major cities, the diplomatic district of Central Kabul and international military bases have also occurred.
